In 1909 the most symbolic uprising in Barcelona’s contemporary history took place. The Kingdom of Spain had lost its last colonies in Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines 11 years earlier; it could not afford to lose northern Morocco. So the Maura government ordered the mass embarkation of reservists from across the country to Melilla, while from Barcelona’s docks women and children shouted, “Down with the war! Let the rich go! All or none!” With rising tension in the city, full of demonstrations and protests against the troop departures, the revolt broke out on Monday, July 26, 1909…
