The Bastard

Reigning Alfonso II, El Casto. The Count of Saldaña, Don Sancho and the Infanta Jimena, sister of the King, decide to get engaged in a deaf wedding, without royal blessings. The King orders the Count of Saldaña imprisoned, and orders his eyes to be torn out, and Doña Jimena is locked up for life in a Convent to keep her away from the world. A few months later, Bernardo came into the world. The King raises him at Court, like a knight, and trains him for war. Bernardo grows oblivious to the tragedy, and becomes a brave warrior, who manages to defeat Charlemagne's French soldiers. Given his heroism, two noble relatives of the Count decide to reveal the true story of his parents. Bernardo, outraged, begs the King to release them, but he refuses. And he decides to look for them.
