Eguzkilore means "sunflower", because it was believed to possess the beneficial properties of the sun, capable of driving away with its light evil spirits, storms and any other danger. The legend tells that every night the evil spirits went to the houses. But in order to enter, they had to say the exact number of petals of the eguzkilore that was hung on the door. But since the flower had thousands of petals, they were mistaken and had to start over and over again. This is how they spent the whole night counting the petals of the eguzkilore without finding the answer, until the first rays of sun drove them away. This was how the eguzkilore fulfilled its protective function.
