The lamias are female creatures of great beauty, long hair, and duck feet that inhabit lush forests on the banks of streams, ponds, lakes, and rivers. Their beauty is such that they enamor humans, but they cannot marry them, at least not within a church, as they cannot step on consecrated ground. If one night you are walking near a stream or brook that crosses a secluded forest, you may come across one of them, sitting on the shore, combing her wonderful mane with a gold comb.
